Wintry mix, snow expected Friday morning through Saturday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Due to the threat of winter precipitation, a first day of weather alert will begin in the early hours of Friday and continue through Saturday.

FIRST WARNING WEATHER DAY MOST IMPORTANT NEWS:

FRIDAY MORNING: Heavy flurries are expected throughout Friday morning, with a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain beginning in the west around 2 a.m. Possible travel unrest can develop on elevated surfaces, bridges and overpasses, especially if heavy rainfall occurs. This could lead to rapid accumulation on exposed surfaces and lawns.

FRIDAY AFTERNOON: There will be a transition line between rain and snow from late morning through midday. The freezing level is raised to the north; However, the cold air accumulating in the east can keep temperatures around 32°C. While precipitation may turn to rain in many areas, parts of eastern Alabama could see significant freezing rain accumulations throughout the afternoon. The rain/snow transition may briefly reach the Alabama/Tennessee state line, with cold rain possible further south.

FRIDAY NIGHT: The rain/snow line will move south again, bringing another round of wintry mix, snow showers or thunderstorms to the area before precipitation ceases. Most of the precipitation will leave the area by 11 p.m. with only a few severe storms remaining. Plan for patchy black ice Saturday morning, with lows in the 20s. Temperatures will improve on Saturday with highs reaching the mid to upper 30s.

IN OTHER NEWS: Expect lows in the teens/20s tonight and wind chills in the teens, with highs in the 40s tomorrow. If you have plans for tomorrow evening, the weather should be good. The main winter impacts will begin Friday morning. Outside of this system, the remainder of the weekend will remain cold and dry.

Long-term data shows temperatures will be below freezing in the morning, and another cold snap may occur between January 16th and 17th. Additionally, there are signals of a possible winter weather system around January 19-20. We are monitoring these long-term developments closely.
