Wintry precipitation and freezing rain will hit the Omaha area on Friday

All right, JESSICA, THANK YOU. Luke. This is just such a tricky forecast. RIGHT? Right near the freeze sign. YES. With temperatures around freezing it really doesn’t look like much. It could be an icy drizzle, some kind of fog, coming down. What we’re worried about is freezing on contact once it hits the ground. And that’s what makes the road conditions outside quite tricky. THEY WERE TREATED WITH BRINE, WHICH SHOULD REDUCE THE FREEZING TEMPERATURE TO ABOUT 20 DEGREES. So if that stays stable, that would really help you with your commute. BUT I WOULDN’T COUNT ON THAT. I would play it safe. We’ve issued a winter weather advisory until 9 a.m. tomorrow morning, and that’s what I’m talking about here. And that’s kind of unfortunate for us because that goes right into the Omaha metro. I looked at Indot cameras. SOME OF THEM LOOK DRYER. This is probably because it evaporates before it hits the ground. OTHERS LOOK REALLY WET. And then things get difficult. So if you could, you know, leave work early, maybe you could stay inside for the next few hours as this progresses. I think it would be good to play it safe here. AND HERE IS A MAGNIFIED VIEW. Not all of them are within Channel Seven’s viewing range. MUCH EASTERN NEBRASKA. FINE. LOTS OF WEST IOWA FINE. AND IF YOU ARE NORTH OF I-80 YOU DEFINITELY WON’T SEE ANY OF IT. IT’S ONLY A SMALL AREA HERE. SARPY COUNTY MOVES TO THE OMAHA METRO. So we show you Storm Predictor. I’ll show you two models here. THIS IS THE FIRST. This one is a little more conservative. It’s drier and very spotty, exactly what we’re seeing right now. It goes until 5:00 p.m. It goes until 8 p.m. It will remain very spotty until the evening, which would be a better scenario for us. BUT THEN EVEN MORE HUMIDITY ARRIVES IN THE NIGHTTIME HOURS WHEN THE SWITCH TO RAIN HAPPENS AT MAYBE 3, 4 OR 5 AM, BUT THEN SOME STILL MIXING IS HAPPENING NEAR TEKAMAH IN THE AREAS NORTH OF I-80. BUT THIS WILL MOVE EAST AS WE GO INTO THE AFTERNOON HOURS TOMORROW. BUT AT THIS POINT IT’S JUST RAINING. Okay, let me show you the next computer model. THIS ONE IS MUCH HARDER. I don’t think that will happen. THERE WILL BE SOMETHING BETWEEN THESE COMPUTER MODELS WHERE THIS WILL BE A BROAD ICE COLD DRIZZLE THAT WILL OCCUR INTO THE EVENING AND PARTS OF THE OVERNIGHT HOURS. It’s midnight and with this computer model it may not switch to rain until 5 or 6 a.m. So it’s somewhat consistent with the switch to just precipitation. What worries us is how widespread it will be and how much of it will evaporate before it hits the ground. And that’s kind of our forecast here. IF YOU ARE NORTH OF I-80, WE EXPECT THERE TO BE MORE POTENTIAL FOR ICE VIEWING. IF YOU ARE SOUTHERN, MORE OF A LIGHT GLAZE. HERE IS OUR SARPY COUNTY CAMERA. It looks like the roads may be getting a little moisture. IT’S NOT MUCH, BUT IT DOESN’T TAKE MUCH WHEN THE TEMPERATURE IS 31 DEGREES. We have a light breeze from the east at 18 miles per hour. HERE ARE OUR TEMPERATURES. And you know, we have to monitor this closely. In some areas the freezing point is a little above freezing, like Fall City, in some areas it is almost freezing. And the dew points are quite low, which indicates to us that the air is dry. THIS RAIN SHOULD HAVE TO OVERCOME THIS, THE LATER WE GO INTO THE EVENING, THE BETTER THE POTENTIAL IS. We’ve increased the chance of the small patch of freezing rain coming from the north at 5 p.m. We think this will arrive in the Omaha metro fairly quickly. 27 DEGREES IN THE MORNING AT THE DOOR. You’ll find out more later tonight. TEMPERATURES WILL CRISE OVERNIGHT AND WE WILL FINALLY REACH THE HIGH TEMPERATURE OF AROUND 37 DEGREES TOMORROW AFTERNOON. See you tomorrow morning. WE EXPECT ONLY LIGHT RAINFALL. So there will be an impact on the roads. BUT IT’S JUST RAIN INFLUENCES. IT IS NOT FREEZING RAIN, IMPACT SUNDAY MONDAY. IT’S MUCH MILER. These are better days to be outside as temperatures will be mild in the 40s. Tuesday a similar day, more clouds, but we drop our temperatures a little closer to the 31, 32 to 35 degree mark on Wednesday and Thursday. But the most important thing we’re paying attention to tonight is the chance that such a small fog can have such a significant impact on the roads. So take it easy and stay inside if you can. I think that would be best to be on the safe side. And we talked about this in our editorial meeting today, but there is no real certainty. THERE IS NO CERTAIN WHAT WILL HAPPEN YET. SCENARIOS THAT COULD HAPPEN. AND THAT’
