Wintry weather is possible Thursday night through Friday morning

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Wild winter weather is set to unfold in Alabama over the next few days, including the threat of snow and/or ice for *parts* of the state.

First things first: It’s a clear and bitterly cold start to Wednesday and we’re expecting another freezing night tonight… with overnight temperatures falling below 20°C. Pets need to stay indoors, keep an eye out for your neighbors, and cover any tinder vegetation you may have outside.

Expect lots of sunshine today and Thursday. Maximum temperatures rise to over 40 degrees every afternoon. We will stay with a light breeze, about 5 to 15 mph per day.

We’ll stay dry until sunset on Thursday, then things will get more interesting…

A developing low pressure system will move south of us along the Gulf Coast. With cold, dry air ahead of this system, it is possible we could see a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet and/or snow as precipitation begins late Thursday evening into Friday morning. Icy spots could form, particularly on bridges and overpasses in parts of central Alabama.

Temperatures will gradually warm up and any wintry precipitation that develops will transition to cold, drenching rain for much of the rest of Friday. Areas north and northeast of Montgomery are most likely to experience this wintry weather, but we can’t rule it out elsewhere either.

It’s important to note that this will be a very close call – a degree or two warmer would give us nothing but cold rain, while a degree or two colder would give us a greater threat of winter storms. Expect potentially significant changes to this forecast in the next few days!

Cold, dry air returns just in time for the weekend, with highs barely reaching the 40s on Saturday and Sunday and lows falling back below freezing overnight. Winter in Alabama is off to a cold start!
