The Indianapolis Colts entered Week 17 with two potential — albeit unlikely — paths to the playoffs. However, after the LA Chargers’ Week 17 win over New England, one of those avenues is now closed.

Among the scenarios that could have gotten the Colts into the postseason was them winning their last two games and the Chargers losing their last two games. But with the Chargers’ win on Saturday against the Patriots, Los Angeles has now secured a spot in the playoffs.

The Chargers took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, then outscored New England in the second and third quarters, outscoring the Patriots 23-7 in that period before ultimately winning the game 40-7.

Justin Herbert and the Chargers’ passing game was nearly unstoppable as he completed 26 of 38 passes for 281 yards with three touchdowns. In total, the Chargers generated 428 yards of offense.

Meanwhile, the Patriots’ offense couldn’t even muster a total of 200 yards.

The Colts’ remaining path to the playoffs involves finishing the season 2-0 and losing the Denver Broncos’ final two games. In addition to those two results, Indianapolis also needs either Cincinnati or Miami to win.

This would then lead to a three-way tie for the AFC’s final playoff spot, a tiebreaker that the Colts with the better conference record would win.

With the Broncos playing on Saturday afternoon, it’s possible the Colts could be eliminated from playoff contention before they even take the field on Sunday.
