Wizards Notes: Losing streak, Poole, Coulibaly, Valanciunas, rookies

The wizard ended their 16-game losing streak with a win over Denver on Saturday. Both teams were missing key players and Washington withstood a 56-point disaster Nikola Jokic. Jordan Poole Washington led with 39 points.

“Of course we want to win more games” Poole said. “We want to be extremely competitive night after night. But that’s how we learn. We have a lot of guys learning, a lot of them come and go (with injuries). So you don’t want to jump ship just because there’s some adversity. Everything we were taught all season just happened to show up (Saturday).”

Poole made a career-best nine 3-pointers. “I’ve been waiting to do this for a while.” Poole said.

We have more about the Wizards:

  • Bilal Coulibaly Had another tough offensive night on Saturday, going 2-9 from the field. However, he was a defensive force with four steals and three blocks. “He caused havoc out there.” trainer Brian Keefe said. “Steal. Blocks. … Yes, Bilal has missed some shots lately, but that hasn’t affected his energy, effort and defense. I actually think his defense has actually improved over the last week. Look at some of the guys he protected and what they did against him, it wasn’t that great. And that’s a testament to who he is: He fights through adversity.”
  • Jonas Valanciunas hopes that Lithuania will be selected to host FIBA EuroBasket 2029. Lithuania is one of the countries that applied. “A lot has to happen first – paperwork, details, all that.” But if we get the chance, that would be great.” Valanciunas told Grant Afseth of DallasHoopsJournal.com. “It’s a basketball festival. We are a basketball country, just like Slovenia. It would be an honor to host EuroBasket.”
  • Rookies have to get used to officiating in the NBA, and the Wizards’ first-year players are no different. Monumental Sports Network’s Chase Hughes explains how Carlton Carrington and other novice Wizards learn how to deal with officiating teams.
