Woburn, Westford and Millis school districts hit by statewide data breach – Boston News, Weather, Sports

WOBURN, MASS. (WHDH) – At least three school districts in Massachusetts have been affected by a nationwide data breach by software company PowerSchool.

All schools in Woburn, Westford and Millis were affected by the hack, which may have compromised the personal information of millions of students and teachers across the United States.

PowerSchool is a cloud-based platform that offers a range of services including registration, attendance and learning systems.

According to the company, the hacker attack targeted a customer service portal at the end of December.

In a letter to families, Millis Public Schools Superintendent Bob Mullaney warned that the compromised data could include names, addresses and contact information. Leaders in other districts said the hacked data did not include Social Security numbers.

PowerSchool assures its customers that they have contained the breach and there is no longer any evidence of malware or unauthorized activity.

“We do not expect the data to be shared or published, and we assume it has been deleted without further copying or distribution,” PowerSchool said in a statement.

The company also said there were no operational disruptions.

In informing families of the breach, Woburn Public Schools Superintendent Matthew Crowley wrote, “This news and the delay in reporting it to us from PowerSchool is extremely concerning.”

PowerSchool said it will provide credit monitoring to all adults affected by the data breach and identity protection services to all children.
