WR Xavier Worthy left the game with an ankle injury

UPDATE: It was a brief absence for Worthy, who joined his teammates on the field at the start of the second half.

The full original story begins below.

The Kansas City Chiefs entered their Week 16 game against the Houston Texans with a mixed injury record, and things weren’t going much better early in the contest.

Just before halftime, rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy suffered what appeared to be a non-contact lower-body injury while tackling cornerback Jeff Okudah. After that second-and-10 play in the second quarter, he hobbled to the sideline and Kansas City used its second timeout of the half.

According to an announcement from the Chiefs on their official X (formerly Twitter) account, Worthy is dealing with an ankle ailment. His return has been questionable since the half-time break.

Before leaving Saturday’s game, Worthy was often involved in the offense. Not only was he targeted five times in the passing game, but he also completed four of those attempts for 26 yards. He also got two runs for three yards on the ground. This was the continuation of a solid workload for the first-round pick, who has no fewer than four receptions in every game since the loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 11.

Earlier this month, head coach Andy Reid praised Worthy, describing a “major concern” for Worthy that was anything but a real cause for concern.

“He’s doing better,” Reid said. “I think that’s what we can all see. It’s no secret, he’s making this public for everyone to see, and so my main concern is that he just keeps doing it. That’s what you want to do. Keep working to improve,” and let’s see where it all ends up. But he’s doing a good job, he’s got the confidence of the quarterback, he’s got the confidence of the coaches, he’s playing fast, it looks like he’s got his legs back from training camp and the start of the season. This is all positive, but you have to spread the product further.

This story will be updated as more information regarding Worthy’s injury becomes available.
