WSFA is tracking rain and strong storms Saturday night through Sunday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – A powerful storm system will move across the Deep South this weekend, bringing strong to severe storms. Alabama is currently experiencing some minor activity on the radar, but more activity is expected in the western portions of the state late Saturday evening into the overnight hours, continuing into early Sunday morning in our eastern counties; Damaging wind gusts, heavy rain, lightning and hail are the main impacts, with the threat of tornadoes low but not zero.

Saturday was a day of monitoring what’s happening out west, with dozens of warnings issued for places like Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. We are watching our atmosphere closely…as this disturbance spreads across the region, we will likely have many of the ingredients we need to support severe storms.

Thanks to a rising warm front, temperatures quickly rose to the upper 60s and lower 70s, later helping to boost activity locally.

The big news we can welcome in January will be the drop in temperatures: afternoon highs will fall back into the 40s and 50s, while overnight lows are expected to be in the 20s and 30s.
