Yankees in pursuit of Kyle Tucker – that goes for these teams too

DALLAS — It’s increasingly looking like the Astros are open to trading Kyle Tucker and the Yankees are among the teams pursuing the star outfielder most seriously, The Post has learned.

The Yankees, however, may not be Tucker’s most determined pursuer as the Winter Meetings neared their end. The Cubs are considered a strong player at left wing and the Giants are also in talks with the Astros.

The Phillies were also among the teams that at least inquired and tried to find a package that would work with the Astros.

Tucker, who turns 28 next month, is a free agent after the season, and Juan Soto’s record 15-year, $765 million contract with the Mets likely puts Tucker at $300 million or maybe even $400 next offseason bring millions of US dollars. Houston owner Jim Crane has never shown the courage to spend so long and so much money to keep this type of player, which is why Tucker has become such a hot topic at these meetings.

Houston actually got a taste of life without Tucker last year when he missed three months with a shin bruise and still posted an AL-best 48-31 from June 4 to Sept. 31. 5, even though Tucker had been their best player before the injury.

The Astros are prioritizing major league-ready corner infielders and starting pitching if they move Tucker. With first baseman Matt Shaw (the Cubs’ top prospect according to MLB.com), third baseman Cam Smith and 2024 All-Star Isaac Paredes, Chicago has talent that will be attractive to Houston, which is primed at third baseman Losing Alex Bregman in free agency.

The intriguing thing about the Yankees is that they have seven potential starters for next season through a deal with Max Fried. The thought is that this would motivate them to trade Marcus Stroman to get as much of his $18 million he is owed next year as possible and/or Nestor Cortes, who will be entering his walk year . And that could happen.

However, with the top of the Yankee farm system in a downturn, they would have to get creative to land someone as talented as Tucker, and Houston is said to have strong interest in AL Rookie of the Year Luis Gil. It’s possible that Gil and Ben Rice could present a package that at least brings the Yankees to the table.

Tucker would be as good a left-handed outfield response as the Yankees can get to the loss of Soto. And if they sign him, the Yankees would be trading for a star in that category for the second straight year, after acquiring Soto from the Padres at the Winter Meetings last season. Think of Gil, or perhaps to some extent Clarke Schmidt, like Michael King last year, as the key piece sent to San Diego to get Soto.

Reflecting his all-around excellence, Tucker played in just 78 games last year, but finished 27th in the majors in WAR at 4.2 (Fangraphs), fifth behind Aaron Judge, Soto, Gunnar Henderson and Bobby Witt Jr. – that Ultimate top four in AL MVP voting – when a ball was fouled off his right shin and he was down for three months.

Tucker won a Gold Glove in 2022, finished fifth for AL MVP in 2023 when he hit 29 homers, stole 30 bases, led the AL with 112 RBIs and posted a career-best 181 OPS-plus in 339 plate appearances last season.

Tucker, the Astros’ fifth overall pick in 2015, hasn’t played anywhere other than Houston and therefore almost certainly wouldn’t give permission to work out a long-term contract as part of a trade because he wants to see how he likes each one new locale.
