Yankees news: No Juan Soto in 2025 as he signs with the Mets

MLB.com | Brian Murphy: Last night it was announced that the Juan Soto Experience in the Bronx would only last one year, as the outfielder signed a 15-year, $765 million contract with the New York Mets that included no deferments and a $75 million contract bonus includes -up and a fifth-year opt-out that could be voided if the Mets simply reach an $805 million overall deal. The Yankees, meanwhile, offered “only” $760 million over 16 years. Well, we’ll always have that one World Series run, but yeah, this one hurts.

MLB trade rumors | Mark Polishuk: While Juan Soto and the pitching market have been the main topics of the winter so far, the Yankees are also looking for infield help with Gleyber Torres and Anthony Rizzo being free agents. With that in mind, they have expressed interest in second baseman Thairo Estrada, who has spent the last three years in San Francisco. Estrada will be familiar to Yankees fans, having played 61 games for the club during the 2019 and 2020 seasons and was known in the fan base as a candidate for returning from a gunshot wound prior to Jacoby Ellsbury’s return from the IL.

It’s unclear whether the Yankees might consider him as a starter or as a reliever, as he posted just a 68 OPS+ in limited action in 2024 after posting above league average in three straight seasons. At this point, however, the team only needs infielders, regardless of role, as their 40-man roster only has six infielders with big league experience — and that’s assuming you count Ben Rice as a first baseman.

MLB trade rumors | Mark Polishuk: Yesterday was a busy day on the Teoscar Hernández front. Although rumors swirled that he was close to a deal to return to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Yankees, Red Sox and Blue Jays remain in play. Apparently his market – along with Anthony Santander’s – has been delayed so far this winter by the Juan Soto saga. The Dodgers have agreed to terms with Michael Conforto but are reportedly still on the hunt for Teoscar.

Sports Illustrated | Harrison Smajovits: As seems to be the case every year, the Yankees are in the market to start pitching. This year, the target appears to be former Atlanta Braves left guard Max Fried. Earlier this week, it was reported that the Yankees had a Zoom meeting with him and his agent. New rumors that surfaced yesterday afternoon suggest that the two most likely destinations are the Yankees and the Red Sox.
