Yellowstone Finale Tribute: Who Was Bob Avila?

Although the season finale of Yellowstone delivered many long-awaited answers — including what would happen to the titular ranch around which the drama unfolds — and many viewers walked away with a whole new question: Who was Bob Avila?

The question arose just before the episode expired, when a title card flashed on the screen that read, “This episode is dedicated to Bob Avila.” See you on the dusty path, amigo.”

So who was the man the show paid tribute to? Avila was a respected, legendary horseman who died on November 9th at the age of 72. Rodeo reports that in addition to being inducted into the National Reining Horse Association Hall of Fame, he was also a two-time winner of the World’s Greatest Horseman title.

The son of a rodeo cowboy whose mother taught youngsters to ride, Avila raised and trained horses before passing on everything he learned to those who followed him.

And what did Avila have a connection to? Yellowstone? In the five seasons of the horse opera, real cowboys were regularly included in the scenes. In Avila’s case, he appeared in a season three episode titled “I Killed a Man Today.” Several other well-known horsemen appeared in the episode, which included scenes of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton shopping for – what else? – new horses!
