‘Yellowstone’ preview note fuels speculation about series finale

“Yellowstone” ends in two weeks…or does it?

Fans are speculating about the future of the hit Paramount Network show after seeing a preview of the upcoming penultimate episode of season five.

During the preview that aired after Sunday’s episode, the announcer said that “there is only one episode left until the season finale of Yellowstone.”

They didn’t refer to the season five finale, which airs on December 15, as a “series finale” – even though the series is reportedly not returning for a sixth season.

After the preview aired, social media was abuzz with speculation about the fate of the show.

“Did I hear that right? @Yellowstone? One more episode BEFORE THE SEASON FINALE? Not the SERIES finale, but the SEASON finale! #Yellowstone#YellowstoneTV,” one person wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

“I’m sorry they said season finale???” another person said.

A third fan wrote: “In the promo they call the last episode of #Yellowstone Season 5 a season finale, which seems unlikely if it doesn’t continue.”

“Not that I have any faith in TS (Taylor Sheridan) at all, but did anyone notice that last night at the end of #Yellowstone they said ‘Season Finale’ and not Series Finale?” someone else said.

Another fan asked: “Maybe I’m a little out of the loop, but the bumper said ‘season finale’ of #Yellowstone and not ‘series finale’ like I was led to believe. “Have they officially announced a sixth season?”

“Wait a minute… this preview mentioned the S5 finale, not the series finale… I thought the show was ending?” another viewer added.

The Post has reached out to reps for the show for comment.

In August, multiple media outlets reported that “Yellowstone” might return for a sixth season with a story that would reportedly focus on Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser).

Paramount has never officially confirmed or announced a sixth season.

Hauser, 49, told The Post in September that he would reprise his role as Rip beyond season five.

“If Taylor writes it, I would definitely like to do it,” he said. “The cast, you know, I consider them all family. So if Taylor did something and brought it and put it on my table, I would definitely do it.”

It was announced that “Yellowstone” would end with Season 5 in May 2023 – the same month rumors surfaced about Kevin Costner’s exit amid his alleged feud with 54-year-old Sheridan.

Costner, 69, later confirmed his exit from the series in June 2024.

“I loved it and I know you did. “I just wanted to let you know that I will not be returning,” the Oscar winner told his fans in a video. “I love the relationships I’ve been able to build.”

Costner’s John Dutton was unceremoniously killed off in the premiere episode of Season 5B, which aired on November 10th. The series also killed off Dawn Olivieri’s Sarah Atwood and Denim Richards’ Colby Mayfield in its supposed final episodes.

Several stars of the series have hinted at what to expect from the season five finale.

Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton, told The Post last month that the ending was “deep and beautiful.” Heartbreaking.”

Bentley added to The Post: “I think fans will be excited because it will be surprising in a lot of ways.”

While a sixth season is not confirmed, there are numerous “Yellowstone” spinoff shows, including an upcoming one called “The Madison” starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Matthew Fox, Kurt Russell and Patrick Adams.

“Yellowstone” airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on Paramount Network.
