YNW Melly’s lawyer is under investigation for witness tampering as the rapper awaits a retrial

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Read it in Spanish

Rapper YNW Melly, who is currently awaiting a retrial on double murder charges in Broward County, must now make a decision about his legal team after news that one of his lawyers is under investigation.

The rapper, whose real name is Jamell Demons, appeared at a hearing in a Fort Lauderdale courtroom on Monday.

Demons, 25, appeared wearing a red prison jumpsuit. But the focus of the hearing was one of his lawyers, Raven Liberty.

Liberty is currently under investigation by the Broward Sheriff’s Office on allegations of witness tampering. She is not currently facing any charges and was not in court on Monday due to a flight delay.

Demons’ defense team said it needed to know the scope of the BSO investigation, saying the rapper hadn’t even seen Liberty in person in more than a year.

His lawyers said they couldn’t move forward as a defense team until they spoke to Demons and found out whether he wanted to keep Liberty and the rest of his legal team.

Demons has been in prison for nearly six years, accused of murdering his childhood friends Chris Thomas and Anthony Williams after a late-night shooting in 2018 and allegedly covering it up to make it look like the drive-by shooting.

His first double murder trial ended in a mistrial in 2023.

Another hearing is scheduled for Tuesday morning and Demons’ retrial is scheduled for September.
