Five Iowans won at least $1 million in lottery winnings in 2024. That includes Shelby Willis of Des Moines, who won the biggest jackpot of the year in the state. Willis, 64, won the Lucky for Life competition prize in November. According to the Iowa Lottery, he could have taken $1,000 a day for life, but chose the lump sum payment of $5.75 million. Now he plans to move to the East Coast. “I’ve got a few things I want to clean up here.” “Firstly, so that I have a clean slate when I return to Jersey,” he told the Lottery. Willis, who was born in Iowa but spent most of his adult life in New Jersey, says he returned to Des Moines 12 years ago to help his father. Willis worked in the security industry but quit his job immediately after winning a big prize. “I need to tidy up a few things here first so I have no worries when I return to Jersey,” he told the Lottery. Willis, who was born in Iowa but spent most of his adult life in New Jersey, says he returned to Des Moines 12 years ago to help his father.

The state’s largest unclaimed lottery prize is $390,000 on Dec. 16, going to a Lucky for Life player who won big in the Dec. 15 game on a ticket from Kum & Go in Waukee.

There are only two other unclaimed five-figure prizes: a $50,000 Powerball ticket sold in Bettendorf for the July 29 drawing and a $10,000 Mega Millions ticket , which was sold in Denison for the Sept. 10 drawing.
