Young Thug’s co-defendant, Yak Gotti, was stabbed in prison while awaiting sentencing, according to his lawyer

One of the two remaining co-defendants in Georgia’s longest criminal trial was stabbed to death in prison, his lawyer said Monday morning as jurors resumed deliberations in the sprawling extortion case that also involved rap superstar Young Thug.

Douglas Weinstein, an attorney for Deamonte Kendrick, a rapper known as Yak Gotti, said in a TikTok post that he was stabbed in the south annex of the Fulton County Jail and spoke to him Sunday evening as he waited to get sewn in to be taken to a hospital.

“Although he sounded tired, I expect him to make a full recovery,” Weinstein wrote on X. “I expect to be able to see him in court today and then I will know more.”

Weinstein was initially unable to provide any information about the circumstances of the incident or the extent of Kendrick’s injuries.

The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a statement that Kendrick was involved in a physical altercation with another inmate and “required treatment at the Fulton County Jail for minor sharp object injuries.”

“This is an active investigation to identify the perpetrator of this incident and determine whether charges will be filed,” sheriff’s office spokeswoman Natalie Ammons said.

The Fulton County Jail, including its south annex and two other locations, is part of a federal investigation announced by the Justice Department last month that alleges inmates’ civil rights were violated and officials tolerated poor living conditions and rampant violence. According to the report, there were more than 300 stabbings involving contraband and makeshift weapons last year. The review was opened after an inmate was found dead in a bedbug-infested cell in 2022; Fulton County officials said they are working to address the issues raised.

Meanwhile, jurors in the case against Kendrick and co-defendant Shannon Stillwell returned to court Monday morning to decide the men’s fate on several charges related to the state’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. The discussions began last Tuesday afternoon.

The case initially involved 28 co-defendants, including Young Thug, whom Fulton County prosecutors accused in a 2022 indictment of leading an Atlanta street gang, Young Slime Life, or YSL. (Young Thug founded his own label, YSL Records, in 2016.)

The co-defendants’ trial began in January 2023 but dragged on through multiple delays and unexpected twists after several defendants reached plea agreements while others chose to be tried separately from Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Lamar Williams to become.

Opening arguments began in November 2023 with six co-defendants. The livestreamed trial captivated social media users: Prosecutors used the Grammy-winning rapper’s lyrics to allege violence and illegal acts, as well as bizarre moments involving alleged drug trafficking, uncooperative key witnesses and combative incidents with the previous judge close.

In December 2023, Stillwell was stabbed during a prison fight, further delaying the trial.

The trial was paused again in July when the original judge was removed after holding a private meeting with prosecutors and a key witness that was not attended by members of the defense. Then, in October, the trial was thrown into disarray after the prosecutor made a misstep in the testimony of a witness, potentially leading to a mistrial.

Four of the six co-defendants entered into plea agreements, including Young Thug. When he struck a deal, the rapper was released from prison and had his 40-year sentence commuted to time served and a 15-year suspended sentence.

The longest criminal trial ever in Georgia lasted about eight months and involved Atlanta public school teachers accused of extortion in a cheating scandal.
