Zakir Hussain was admitted to hospital

According to a report published by PTI, Zakir has been admitted to the intensive care unit. He was hospitalized after heart problems, his friend and flautist Rakesh Chaurasia confirmed to the news agency on Sunday.

A source close to Zakir said that the 73-year-old US-based musician had been suffering from blood pressure problems.

“He was admitted to a hospital in San Francisco last week for a heart problem. He is not doing well and is currently in intensive care. We are all worried about the situation,” Chaurasia told PTI.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that he had been admitted to a hospital in San Francisco and was being treated for “serious” health conditions. At this moment, his family requests everyone’s prayers and blessings for his speedy recovery. Further details about his health are not yet known.

Zakir Hussain is India’s most famous tabla player. He is a recipient of the Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri as well as the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. He is also a composer, percussionist, music producer and film actor. Zakir Hussain was born on March 9, 1951 to tabla maestro Alla Rakha and Bavi Begum in Mahim, Mumbai and had an inclination towards playing tabla from a young age.

He learned the mridang (a classical percussion instrument) from his father when he was just three years old and began performing in concerts at the age of twelve. He has collaborated with several Western musicians, including the legendary pop band The Beatles. In 2024, the tabla maestro made history at the 66th Grammy Awards, becoming the first Indian to win three trophies in a single night.
