Zendaya's best red carpet fashion of 2024 is in a league of its own

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear Zendaya’s name? Is it her history-making Emmy award for her performance? Euphoria, or she faces off against Arrakis as rebel princess Chani Dune: Part Two? How about coordinating couple outfits with your boyfriend (and Spiderman Co-star) Tom Holland? Well, if you’ve been paying attention to the red carpets of 2024, you most likely associate “Zendaya” with “best dressed.”

Zendaya’s best red carpet fashion of 2024 made her more than just a style icon or a dedicated student of runway history; She is a style chameleon. She has made more than 50 red carpet appearances Marie Claire Editors this year – and she was our readers’ most-watched celebrity. She and image architect Law Roach wrote the book on smart dressing, diving into prestigious runway collections and crafting bespoke pieces from Loewe, Louis Vuitton and Bottega Veneta (among others) to suit their roles in sci-fi -epic to refer to Dune: Part Two and the tennis throuple drama challenger. She co-chaired the 2024 Met Gala; She won a gold medal in street style at the Paris Olympics. At every single appearance, her outfit was by far the most anticipated.

Zendaya, on the other hand, kept viewers on their toes while pushing her own boundaries. From a distance, she appeared to be embracing glittering cyborg suits from Givenchy (e.g dune), tennis ball greens and Wimbledon whites from Loewe, Thom Browne and Calvin Klein (for challenger) and Shakespeare dresses by Vivienne Westwood (for one evening only in London) with equal enthusiasm. She even wore a cyborg suit made of metal – real metal! – from Mugler, just to show her devotion duneis the futuristic aesthetic.

Even when successive appearances were made with pieces designed by the same house, they never looked exactly the same. Her looks varied in shape, texture, and the glamor that went with them, but she went head-to-toe with each look, changing her manicure or coloring her hair to best accentuate the dress (or suit). She also took the time to champion smaller designers alongside LVMH-backed names, such as the experimental Torishéju Dumi and the Greek couture house Celia Kritharoti.

It’s a testament to her red carpet prowess that no one notices the red carpet anxiety she often feels underneath all the wigs, makeup, and gravity-defying dresses. She began to feel hesitation at some of the looks at her Vanity Fair Cover story interview this fall. But ultimately, she said, these outfits are a form of armor and a way to get into character; She can’t help but get involved. “I also think that fashion is a tool for me in many ways. I consider myself to be a more shy person, which you probably wouldn’t quite tell by the crazy, sometimes ridiculous things I wear,” she said.

Objectively speaking, anyone wearing a metal suit or a dress that’s nearly a century old is going to make headlines. But Zendaya and Roach also stood out in recent fashion archival history because of how they do their research. The pieces they choose come from collections with an aesthetic connection to the event they are attending or the project Zendaya is promoting. And the couple supports vintage collectors. “We don’t take out loans,” Roach famously said fashion during the dune “We buy” promotional cycle.

These choices seem even more authentic to Zendaya when you consider that they aren’t limited to a single press tour or red carpet. Each of these fashion moments included hair and makeup to highlight the dress – and the original context in which it was worn.

No one can blame the story of a Zendaya look for overshadowing the look itself. Nothing the actress wears she ever wears, be it sparkly Armani Privé for the 2024 Oscars or a Burberry off the runway for a commercial appearance. You and Roach can choose from subtle or exaggerated colors, colorful or bold black and white colors, decades-old vintage styles or brand new custom styles. Each individual look works because it uses different means to achieve the same goal – showcasing Zendaya’s attitude and fashion appreciation as the leading lady.

The designers have taken notice, not just opening up their archives for Roach and Zendaya to plunder as much as they want. After years of dedicated commitment to wearing Christian Louboutin’s “So Kate” heels, the label is releasing a “Miss Z” pump next year in Zendaya’s honor. Louis Vuitton recently tapped Z as its ambassador, dressed her for Paris Fashion Week (her only front row last season), tapped her for a long-awaited, early collaboration campaign with Takashi Murakami, and even created custom burgundy outfits for her dates- Evenings with Tom Holland. When Z likes a house, she wears it frequently and authentically according to her personal style. This kind of genuine brand loyalty seems to be rare, while other celebrities are fleetingly joining in on the loud luxury trend.
